The GEO Playbook (2026)

The full 2026 playbook for getting cited by AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, engine by engine, with the pages and assets each one needs.

May 14, 2026 · by SEO Legendary Research

1. Why GEO is not SEO with a new hat

Classic SEO optimizes for ten blue links. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) optimizes for a single synthesized answer built from a shortlist of citations. The unit of victory changes from position to inclusion.

AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot each retrieve from a different index, apply a different reranker, and cite a different number of sources. The overlap between them is smaller than most teams assume, in our tracking panel it sits around 31% for the same prompt.

2. The five engines, in one table

EngineRetrieval sourceTypical citationsRanking lever that matters most
Google AI OverviewsGoogle index + Gemini3-8 linksPassage-level clarity + classic authority
ChatGPT SearchBing + OpenAI web crawl3-6 linksFreshness + declarative first sentence
PerplexityTheir own crawl + Bing5-10 linksStructured, list-like content
GeminiGoogle index2-5 linksEntity + schema clarity
CopilotBing3-6 linksBing rank + clean HTML

Notice that four of the five lean on Bing or Google under the hood. Winning classic SERPs on both is still 60% of the job, GEO is the other 40% that most teams have never touched.

3. Content shape that gets cited

Rerankers reward pages that answer a question in the first 60 words, then support the answer with structured evidence. The wall-of-text intro is a citation killer.

  1. 01Open with a one-sentence declarative answer. No throat-clearing.
  2. 02Follow with a 3-5 item structured summary (list, table, or definition block).
  3. 03Then go deep, sources, exceptions, counter-examples.
  4. 04Close with an FAQ that mirrors the People Also Ask cluster.

4. Entities, schema, and the knowledge graph

LLMs resolve queries into entities before they retrieve. If your brand is not a resolved entity, you are competing for a chair at a table you cannot see.

  • Publish a canonical About / Organization page with sameAs links to Crunchbase, LinkedIn, Wikipedia (when eligible), and your primary social handles.
  • Mark up Organization, Person, Product, and Article schema. Validate with Schema.org's validator, not just Google's rich results test.
  • Use consistent naming across the web, one spelling, one legal entity, one primary URL.

5. Measuring what you cannot see

You cannot manage what you do not measure. Build a prompt panel of 40-120 buyer-intent queries and query every engine on a weekly cadence. Log which sources each engine cites and compute your Share of Model.

“The first week we ran the panel we discovered our brand was cited zero times in ChatGPT for our own product category. Nine weeks later we were the top-cited source.”

6. Distribution: getting into the training set

Retrieval-augmented answers pull from the live web. But base-model behavior is shaped by what appeared, repeatedly, in the training corpus. That corpus rewards a specific kind of surface area.

  • Placement in high-authority editorial (news, industry pubs) with your brand named in-line, not just in bio.
  • Original research that other sites cite verbatim, a stat becomes an anchor.
  • GitHub, Stack Overflow, and Reddit presence where relevant (LLMs weight these heavily for technical categories).
  • Consistent presence in structured directories (G2, Capterra, product wikis).

// key takeaways
  • ✓GEO victory = inclusion in a synthesized answer, not blue-link position.
  • ✓Four of five major engines lean on Google or Bing; classic SEO is still 60% of the work.
  • ✓Content shape (declarative answer + structured evidence) is the fastest lever.
  • ✓You cannot skip entity + schema hygiene. LLMs resolve entities first.
  • ✓Build a prompt panel by week two. Everything else follows the measurement.
